Les élégantes à la plage – Wimereux, an impressionist oil painting on panel by Camille Rousseau (France), dating to 2000–2010, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Atmospheric and particularly decorative beach scene by the French painter Camille Rousseau (1949), executed in oil on a wooden panel.
The painting shows a lively scene on the beach of Wimereux, the characterful resort on the French Opal Coast. A party of elegantly dressed beachgoers enjoys a day by the sea. Central in the composition are several ladies in long, colorful dresses, while other visitors are portrayed sitting or strolling along the beach. Sun umbrellas and a few small sailboats enhance the quintessential image of French beach life.
What stands out is the beautiful use of color. The clothing in blue, pink, yellow, and violet forms a vivid contrast with the more subdued tones of the sand, the sea, and the cloudy sky. Especially the central group draws the eye and gives the work an elegant and almost mondain character.
Rousseau employs a loose, impressionistic brushwork, with clearly visible brushstrokes and locally pasted-on paint. Figures and details are suggested with a few precise strokes, so the work, despite its modest size, radiates a lot of movement and atmosphere. The soft transition between sky and sea provides both calm and depth.
