Orrefors glass wall and display bowl, Unikat Ariel, dating from circa 2000–2010, white, 41 cm in diameter and 4 cm high, signed Orrefors Ariel Unikat on the base.
Description from the seller
ORREFORS, UNIQUE PIECE
Sweden, 20th century.
Rare, significant wall- and display bowl in monumental format. Colorless, heavily wall-standing crystal glass with emerald-green intermediate layer. The centrally composed motif shows the profiléd representation of a proud rooster. The contours of the plumage, the tail feathers, and the comb of the rooster were carved in relief and plastically highlighted in the glass body through precisely controllable air-bubble inclusions (Ariel Technique). On the base, in diamond-cut, signed and labeled: Orrefors Ariel Unique Piece [Signature/Number].
Diameter: 41 cm.
Catalogue Note (Lot Notes)
The Ariel Technique, developed in the 1930s by Edvin Öhrström, Axel Salmonsen and master glassblower Gustav Bergkvist at Orrefors, is regarded as one of the most technically demanding milestones of modern studio glass art. In this advancement of Graal glass, recessed decors are cut into colored intermediate-overlay glass or sandblasted. In the subsequent re-fusing and overfusing with colorless glass, air channels lie in the recessed areas, remaining as shimmering, silvery light reflections in the glass body.
Pieces with pictorial animal motifs in this finding size (41 cm) and the status as numbered unique pieces are extremely rare on the international auction market and occupy an outstanding position within Swedish Modernist glass art.
