MYTHOLOGY OF THE LADIES
By M. Brès. 1823
Paris, Louis Janet, Bookseller, Rue St. Jacques, No. 59.
A duodecimo volume bound in pale blue calico of the period, the boards and the spine richly adorned with gilded frames in floral motifs and neoclassical urns, with gilded edges.
The work opens with a color frontispiece and contains 9 superb hors-texte plates finely hand-illuminated (notably depicting Leda and the Swan, or Aurora and Cephalus).
The editor Louis Janet was particularly renowned during the Restoration and the July Monarchy for his “étrennes” and his small, elegant illustrated books designed specifically for ladies, combining the delicacy of fashion or mythological engravings with romantically refined bindings.
Very fine copy.
