AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

[Etienne Nicolas Villette / Clergé de Laon]
History of Our Lady of Liesse (dedicated to Monseigneur Estienne-Joseph de La Fare, Duke-Bishop of Laon), 1708.

A precious historical and devotional work dedicated to the famous pilgrimage of Our Lady of Liesse, located in the Aisne. The dedicatory epistle is addressed to Estienne-Joseph de La Fare, Duke-Bishop of Laon and second peer of France, noting that the first edition had been dedicated to his predecessor Louis de Clermont.

The volume is adorned with a magnificent frontispiece engraved after Jacques Stella (Stella Inv.) and carved by Thomassin (Thomassin Sculptor R.), depicting the Virgin of Liesse and the pilgrims, as well as folding engraved plates illustrating the history of the Knights of کن (the brothers of Ecsles / d’Erlach or the legend of the statue brought from the Holy Land) and the local heraldry.

Full contemporary brown morocco, spine with raised bands and a title piece bearing the designation “HIST. DE LIES.” (or Hist. de Liesse), inlaid compartments. Wear and small losses to the caps and corners, boards rubbed but the binding remains solid.

Interior well preserved, missing the title page, complete with its frontispiece and its engraved plates, bearing marks or old library stamps on the title page.

Good copy.
