Description from the seller
[Anonymous author / Sometimes attributed to contemporaries]
Continuation of Théophraste's Characters, and the thoughts of Mr. Pascal
In Paris, At Estienne Michallet, First Printer to the King, Rue St. Jacques, 1697 (M. DC. XCVII).
Interesting work of moral and classical literature from the 17th century, part of the lineage of La Bruyère's Characters and Théophraste, associated with the reflections and philosophical and religious thoughts of Blaise Pascal (notably the famous text on Man).
Printed in Paris by Estienne Michallet in 1697, a well-known publisher particularly famous for having published the first editions of La Fontaine and major classical texts of the period.
Full, period calfskin binding with a speckled cover, spine with raised bands adorned with gold compartments and fleurons, title piece in morocco. Signs of wear and small scuffs and losses on the boards and at the capitals, but the binding's structure remains solid.
Interior in generally good condition, text well preserved, enriched with superb headbands and initials engraved in wood.
Good copy.
