Description from the seller
[SUETONIUS]
History of the Roman Emperors, with their portraits in copperplate engraving. Written in Latin by Suetonius, and translated into French by D. B.
In Paris, at Nicolas Le Gras, in the Grand Hall of the Palace, at the third Pillar, 1688 (A.D. 1688)
Classic edition of the famous Lives of the twelve Caesars by Suetonius translated into French by D. B. (Damoye de Boulainvilliers or anonymous translator under these initials), recounting the imperial biographies from Julius Caesar to Domitian.
The work is richly illustrated with a frontispiece engraved in copperplate and a remarkable sequence of portraits of the Roman emperors in medallions surrounded by mottos and allegorical attributes.
Full brown calf of the period, spine with raised bands richly adorned with gilded compartments and fleurs-de-lys, gilt rolled edges. Usual wear to the headpieces and corners, small losses, but the overall structure remains quite solid.
Good overall condition, complete with title page with vignette, with its engraved frontispiece, the superb portraits of the Caesars in medallions, and the detailed table of the twelve books.
Fine copy."
