Original edition, illustrated with eight large photogravures, several full-page or folding plates, devoted to the historical and political interpretation of Nostradamus’s prophecies.
Curious and spectacular work by abbé Henri Torné-Chavigny, one of the major commentators on Nostradamus in the nineteenth century. The author intends to demonstrate the fulfillment of the Centuries in the history of France, from Henry II to the Third Republic, blending prophecy, political history, dynastic iconography, and Nostradamian exegesis. Among the key plates are, notably, “Nostradamus writes the Predicted and Judged History,” a vast gallery bringing together sovereigns and historical figures; Nostradamus the Younger showing Marie de Médicis the Bourbon throne; as well as several plates relating to predictions concerning the French monarchy.
Precious presentation copy, bearing on the title a signed autograph inscription from the author: “Respectful homage to Monsieur de Cornulier-Lucinière, senator — H. Torné.”
This provenance is particularly meaningful since the book expressly bears the note “Ouvrage dédié et distribué au Sénat en 1878”: it very likely is one of the copies personally handed by Torné-Chavigny to a member of the Senate.

Foxing sometimes pronounced, small tears and marginal fragilities, worn corners and some signs of use, without major impact on the large plates. Copy preserved in its old state, with margins on all sides. The second cover plate is incomplete.
