Description from the seller
A beautiful set of three traditional Japanese Satsuma tin craft pieces by Otsuji Asahido (大辻朝日堂), a historic workshop in Kagoshima, southern Japan.
This elegant set consists of three individually decorated pieces, each featuring a classic and auspicious Japanese motif:
* Crane (鶴) – traditionally associated with longevity, happiness and good fortune.
* Turtle (亀) – a symbol of longevity and good fortune in Japanese culture.
* Shochikubai (松竹梅) – the combination of pine, bamboo and plum, representing prosperity, resilience and good fortune.
Together, these three motifs create a particularly charming and distinctly Japanese set.
The pieces are made of Japanese tin (Suzuki / 錫) and have the characteristic soft, silver-grey appearance of traditional Japanese tinware. The finely engraved decorations are beautifully highlighted by the subtle texture and lustre of the tin surface, showcasing the refined craftsmanship of traditional Japanese metalwork.
Satsuma Tin Craft
Satsuma tin craft (Satsuma Suzuki / 薩摩錫器) is a traditional craft associated with Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Japan.
The accompanying literature identifies the maker as Otsuji Asahido (大辻朝日堂) and states that the workshop was founded in 1912 (Taisho 1). The material also describes the workshop as preserving traditional Satsuma tin craftsmanship and producing traditional craftwork in Kagoshima.
The reverse of the pieces bears maker’s markings and inscriptions relating to Kagoshima’s traditional craft, further supporting their provenance.
Original Box and Documentation
The set comes with its original wooden presentation/storage box and original printed explanatory materials concerning Satsuma tin craft and its history.
The combination of three different auspicious Japanese motifs, traditional craftsmanship, the original wooden box and accompanying documentation makes this a particularly appealing set for collectors of Japanese traditional arts and crafts.
