Description from the seller
Camille Rousseau (1949) – The Elegants at the Beach – Merlimont-Plage
Atmospheric and particularly decorative beach scene by the French painter Camille Rousseau (1949), executed in oil on wooden panel.
The work shows a lively beach scene that beautifully fits the atmosphere of Merlimont-Plage, a lesser-known seaside resort on the Opal Coast, located between Le Touquet and Berck-sur-Mer. The broad sandy beach and the calm, somewhat nostalgic appearance form an appropriate setting for this portrayal.
Spread across the beach, we see elegantly dressed bathers. Some figures sit on simple beach chairs, while others stand in small groups. Colorful parasols in yellow, blue and pink and a few characteristic beach cabins interrupt the soft tones of the sand. The dark parasol in the foreground is a striking detail and gives the composition extra depth.
The clouded North French sky is particularly successful. Gray-blue cloud masses hang above the coast and contrast with the warmer ocher, beige and gold tones of the beach. This prevents the scene from having the look of an idealized Mediterranean summer day, and instead conveys the recognizable, changeable atmosphere of the Côte d’Opale.
Rousseau works with a loose, impressionistic brushwork. Figures, parasols and beach cabins are built up with short, decisive brushstrokes. Locally, the paint is applied a bit thicker, giving the small panel a lively and tangible surface. Red, green, yellow and blue accents bring rhythm to the scene without disturbing the tranquil mood.
The painting is signed lower left with "Rousseau" and is presented in a richly decorated gold-colored frame. The classical frame forms an attractive contrast with the spontaneous painting technique and gives the small work a particularly decorative character.
