Description from the seller
Item Description
This is a tall cylindrical flower vase by the Kasama potter 酒井芳樹 Sakai Yoshiki (1950-), titled "White Glaze, Cobalt Blue, Glaze-Painted Flower Vase" as inscribed on the box. A soft white glaze covers the body. A large oval panel of dark slate-grey, with a grid-like pattern, is overlaid with trailed white glaze and touches of cobalt blue. A single horizontal ridge around the middle gives the form a subtle, bamboo-like rhythm. Fine crackle and tiny pinholes in the glaze, most visible around the shoulder, add texture.
The unglazed base is incised with the artist's signature and carries a red seal on a small paper patch, together with the numeral 3. The vase comes with its original wooden box, inscribed with the title and signed and sealed by the artist, and with a printed biography of the artist.
Artist Profile
Sakai Yoshiki was born in 1950 in Sakuragawa City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and established his own kiln in 1975. His studio, Jukigama, stands in the hills of Kasama and includes a small gallery. He was selected for the Traditional Crafts New Works Exhibition from 1978, the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition from 1981 and the Japan Ceramics Exhibition from 1985. He became a full member of the Japan Kogeikai (Japan Art Crafts Association) in 1986. In 2003 he received the Hazan Prize at the Ibaraki Prefecture Arts Festival. His works shown at major exhibitions are often in the white glaze, cobalt blue and glaze-painted style seen on this vase.
