Boerentafereel (XL-Format) is an 18th-century oil painting by a follower of Philips Wouwerman, depicting a summer scene with riders, horses and cattle, unsigned, created in the Netherlands in Realism, and sold with frame, with overall frame measurements of 106 × 86 cm.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

This atmospheric painting, created by an 18th-century follower of Philips Wouwerman (1619–1668), closely aligns with the beloved landscapes and horse-riding scenes of the Haarlem master. The composition is dominated by a lively group of riders, horses and cattle, set against a broad landscape with tents and a dramatically lit sky. The white horse at the center of the scene, a frequently recurring motif in Wouwerman’s oeuvre, forms the visual focal point and brings light and dynamism to the composition.

Philips Wouwerman was one of the leading Dutch painters of horse, hunt, and landscape scenes from the Golden Age. His work remained especially popular after his death and was collected and imitated throughout the 18th century. This painting forms a characteristic example of that. Ready to Hang!

Canvas size: 72 cm length by 53.5 cm width
Frame size: 106 cm length by 86 cm width

The work comes from an estate. Always kept within the family and appraisal available from Christie's.

Condition: The painting is in good condition, but can be cleaned to make the colors come forward more vividly. The back of the canvas has been cleaned in the past for optimal preservation of the canvas (not varnished!). Unfortunately, the frame has sustained some damage due to its size in recent years. At the bottom of the frame a piece has broken off. It can easily be repaired by a restorer. (see photos) In short, a work that has developed patina for its time, but ready to hang.

Seller's Story

My name is Reinoud Sprong, 25 years old and living in Amsterdam, Netherlands. From a family of three brothers and two entrepreneurial parents, I developed a passion for art and antiques at a young age. I attended the premier art fairs and visited museums. I also started early reading about art that particularly interested me. That led to pursuing a Bachelor’s in History at Utrecht University, followed by a Master’s in Art, Market and Connoisseurship at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, which crowned my academic focus in art. Since my youth I have had a fondness for trade and entrepreneurship. From running my own disco, catering, and various side ventures, it was time for the real trade: Art and Antiques! Thanks to my early interests I was able to undertake many different exploratory internships and gain field experience. After a half-year internship as a junior expert in classical art at the fastest-growing European online auction house Catawiki, I was sure: Reinoud would build his own official art dealership. I began with purchases at auctions, online marketplaces, and visits to markets. The first storage space is in my grandmother’s garage, and that is how the adventure began. Now, a bit further along, I’m quite proud of how far we’ve come in a short time. We have customers worldwide and are growing slowly. By active engagement on social media, we try through our videos to enthuse the younger generation for art and antiques. Currently we operate from a small storage area that is almost always full. Customers are very welcome here by appointment! In the future we hope to offer a larger collection of furniture and fine art. My goal is to open a large showroom in a characterful building, where we can welcome all customers. - Follow Art_Leap_Curation on Instagram!
