Description from the seller
Go Mishima (三島剛, 1924–1988) occupies a distinctive place in postwar Japanese male figurative art and underground visual culture. His works are admired for their bold portrayal of masculine beauty, tattooed bodies, disciplined linework and strong psychological presence.
This work is from Mishima’s 1972 Wakamono (“Young Men”) series. The composition depicts a muscular young Japanese man seated in a dramatic rope-bound pose, turning his head over his shoulder with a focused expression. The deep blue tattoo motifs, green rope details and vivid red accents create a striking contrast with the precise black linework and finely rendered anatomy.
A strong example of Mishima’s visual language, combining idealised male beauty, traditional Japanese imagery, tattoo culture and the atmosphere of 1970s Japanese underground art.
