Description from the seller
Splendid and imposing model of a galleon / Portuguese caravel in Christopher Columbus (Santa Maria) style, entirely handmade in solid wood.
Unique folk art piece dating from the 1940s / '50s,
This is not a modern industrial kit, but the work of a craftsman of the time.
Construction details visible in the photos:
• Hull: solid carved wood, composed of two overlapping boards. Lateral decoration with windows and hand-carved star motifs using a pyrography pen and carving knife. Staining with the original dark mordant. Small woodworm holes and signs of wear that attest to its age and authenticity (see detail photo of the side).
• Sails: in original rough hemp/jute canvas, treated with wax and hand-patinaed for an aged and swollen look. Red Cross of the Order of Christ painted on the main sails (typical of Portuguese caravels of the 1500s). Weave detail visible in the photo.
• Deck: richly equipped with belaying pins, barrels, coils of rope, and wooden ladders, all carved and positioned by hand. Rigging and blocks made with natural twine knotted by hand.
• Base: original wooden easel stand.
