BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST
Marguerite Gribi Kreutzberg was an American painter and muralist born in Elgin, Illinois, in 1880. She carried out much of her artistic activity in the Chicago area and stood out especially for easel painting, portrait, landscape, and mural painting. askART
She was a pupil of the renowned American painter William Penhallow Henderson and was linked to the Chicago Art Academy. Her career achieved a certain recognition in the city’s art circle, going on to exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago. Historical documentation from the institute itself confirms her participation in exhibitions: works of hers appear such as Saracen House, Harbor, Palermo, Palazzo, Palermo, Pink Mosque and Shoemakers, Taormina, done in pastel. askART
Her production shows a special interest in landscapes, urban scenes, portraits and views created during her travels. The documented works from Palermo and Taormina indicate her time in Italy, while Bryn Mawr sources also place her in Paris during a European stay. Core
Kreutzberg also worked as a muralist, creating works for public schools in Illinois. Among them a mural documented for a Lake Bluff, Illinois school. askART
In 1923 she also received recognition in an exhibition of Chicago artists: the Art Institute records that Marguerite Kreutzberg, together with Allen Philbrick, won one of the Edward B. Butler Purchase Prizes, for her painting A Little Venus of the Steppes.
