Antique Roskopf pocket watch with a manual movement, model Chronomètre, Galonné, dating from 1850–1900; metal case with a likely silver inner cover, weighing 104 g, case diameter larger than 50 mm, lug width 5.5 cm, in good condition with visible wear and in working order.
Description from the seller
Antique Roskopf pocket watch (often with a case from, for example, Huguenin), presumably from the period around 1890 to 1900.
Features of the watch:
• Dial: White dial with black Roman numerals (I to XII) and red 24-hour inner or outer markings (13 to 24).
• Dial text: It reads "CHRONOMÈTRE" and an indication such as "1a" in red.
• Case: A gold-colored or bronze case with an elegantly engraved floral- or leaf-pattern along the edge.
• Movement: Based on the well-known proletarian/people’s pocket-watch system of Georges-Frédéric Roskopf, which was reliable and affordable in the late 19th century.
- 1. The engraving on the back (Runners / Athletics)
The outer back cover features a detailed engraving of three runners or athletes in historical sports attire during a race. This type of thematic case (such as sports, trains, or hunting scenes) was commonly produced around the turn of the century for specific audiences or as sports prizes.
• "REPASSÉE DE" / "REPASADO DE": This literally means 'checked' or 'adjusted'. It indicates that the movement has been manually inspected and adjusted for sale.
• "EN SECONDE" / "SEGUNDA MANO": This indicates that the watch is equipped with a second hand (or the gearing for it), which at the time was an extra complication for this type of movement.
• The multilingual inscriptions (French/Spanish) show that this watch was specifically intended for export to Spanish-speaking countries or Latin America.
Six-sided/shield-shaped silver hallmarks punched. This indicates that the watch (or at least this inner case) is made of silver, very likely with the Swiss Roaring Bear hallmark (used for .875 silver).
Shipped with acknowledgment and well-packaged.
