Description from the seller
Silver-gilt sugar tongs – Jean-Baptiste Harleux – Paris, 1834–1838 – about 190 years
Elegant antique sugar tongs from 188 to 192 years, made in Paris under the July Monarchy and attributed to goldsmith Jean-Baptiste Harleux.
This piece is particularly interesting for its very tight dating: between 1834 and 1838, i.e. a manufacture now dating back about 188 to 192 years.
It bears the Vieillard punch, first title, used in Paris between 1819 and 1838 for silver at 950‰ fineness, as well as the master mark of Jean-Baptiste Harleux, whose mark was punched in 1834.
This combination thus allows to precisely locate the realization of this tongs within a four-year period, between 1834 and 1838, corresponding to the early years of the master’s activity under the Vieillard punch guarantee system.
