✦ FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING ✦ RATED EXCELLENT
A finely painted pair of Oriental character heads, attributed to Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich (Dieterich or Dietricy) (1712–1774), depicting two elderly men in exotic dress. The attribution is particularly compelling in view of the subjects, the strongly Rembrandtesque treatment of the heads, and the characteristic combination of warm, earthy tones, dramatic chiaroscuro and expressive, individualised physiognomies.
Dietrich was a highly versatile German painter, born in Weimar in 1712 and active principally in Dresden. He became court painter to Augustus III of Saxony in 1741 and was celebrated for his ability to emulate and reinterpret the styles of earlier masters, above all Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age painters. Character studies of exotic and Oriental figures were well suited to this aspect of his artistic practice.
The present pendants display precisely those qualities for which Dietrich was admired: Rembrandtesque lighting, richly modulated flesh tones, exotic costume and strongly characterised heads, combined with the lively painterly handling evident in his works inspired by the Dutch masters.
The close stylistic relationship and sizes of both panels to Dietrich's known character studies makes the attribution particularly strong. A true addition to any discerning art collection.
