Leo Gestel Landschap, an oil painting in the impressionist style from the Netherlands, dated 1911, measuring 65 × 50 cm, signed in the lower left and sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Early (1911) oil painting by Leo Gestel. The dimensions are 65 x 50 cm. The painting is signed bottom-left. The condition is excellent.
Provenance
On 11 June 1911 this painting was probably sold together with "Autumn Landscape" also in the 65 x 50 cm size (now in the collection of the Van Gogh Museum) to Johannes F.S. Esser during the Twenty-First Annual Exhibition of artworks by members of the Vereeniging, cat. 182 (Herfstdag) in Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum (Vereeniging Sint Lucas).
In 1920 or 1924 probably exchanged by Johannes F.S. Esser, Berlin with Piet Boendermaker. In 1932 Piet Boendermaker had to transfer his art collection to the bank for Onroerende Zaken in Amsterdam which this work presumably sold to an unknown buyer in 1946.
On 12 February 1930 Leo Gestel writes to Piet Boendermaker a letter concerning the fire in his studio (1929) with a reference to this painting in which Leo Gestel describes being glad that this painting was not lost in the fire. See copy of letter. A digital copy of this letter will be sent to the buyer.
The work has been in the possession of the family of the current owner since about 1956.
