Description from the seller
Biblia Sacra Vulgatae Editionis – Lyon, Claude Bourgeat – 1669
Important Latin Bible from the 17th century:
Biblia Sacra Vulgatae Editionis, Sixti V. Pont. Max. iussu recognita atque edita
Lugduni [Lyon], Sumptibus Claudii Bourgeat, sub Signo Mercurii Galli, 1669.
Beautiful Lyonnaise edition of the Vulgate, printed under the reign of Louis XIV.
Volume of large dimensions, about 30 × 22 cm, preserved in its old full leather binding. Spine with raised bands richly decorated with compartments and gilded fleurs- and ornaments, with title piece reading “BIBLIA SACRA”.
The work is illustrated notably by a fine engraved frontispiece, a title page printed in red and black with an engraved vignette, as well as an important heraldic device accompanying the dedication to Camille de Neufville, Archbishop of Lyon.
Latin text printed mainly in two columns, accompanied by numerous references and marginal annotations. Presence of drop caps, typographic ornaments and the printer/publisher’s mark.
Bibliographic collation: [16] + 1056 + 25 pages.
The last pages notably include the various indexes, including the Index Testimoniorum and the Index Omnium, with final note FINIS.
Presence of a few ancient handwritten annotations, notably on the title page, providing an additional testimony to the history of this copy.
Condition: copy showing the usual marks of its more than 350 years. Binding heavily rubbed with leather wear, notably at corners, headcaps, joints and raised bands, as well as some small losses. Gilding on the spine still clearly visible. Some stains, foxing, traces and small marginal tears may be present. The interior, however, appears overall well preserved, with paper still clear and impression very legible. See carefully the photographs, which are an integral part of the description.
