Iron tsuba in a near-round form (tate-maru-gata) with a Karayo sansui mountain landscape and a castle in shakudo, with gold and silver detailing, signed and measuring 75 × 78 mm by 5 mm thick, from Edo-period Japan and in excellent original condition.
Description from the seller
Tsuba Sibayama Zu (Passage of Hills with Vegetation)
The Jakushi school is distinguished by its sansui-type landscapes, characterized by the depiction of mountains evoking the Chinese regions of Zhangjiajie and Guilin. In these landscapes, composed of cliffs, rivers, bridges, and lakes, human figures are integrated, predominantly hermit Buddhist monks, as well as the presence of temples.
Japan, Edo Period (1603-1867)
Made of iron, tate-maru-gata; with a mountainous landscape and a castle, executed in niku-bori in gold, silver, and shakudo; kozuka hitsu-ana; signed (mei); edge maru-mimi.
Iron tsuba of almost round shape, engraved and decorated with a landscape in Chinese style (karayo sansui). On the front, the mountains rise at the top, while at the lower right a castle in shakudo with hills underneath appears. The reverse continues the scene, with mountains at the top and hills at the bottom left.
The trees and plants are rendered in copper and gold
