Description from the seller
Although it is not possible to identify the author with certainty and in the absence of a visible signature, given the compositional and chromatic similarities with the famous watercolors by masters of picturesque architecture and 19th‑century North European vedutists, it is considered possible to attribute it to the English artist Samuel Prout.
Samuel Prout (1783–1852) was one of the most celebrated masters of the English School of Watercolor and is internationally renowned for his paintings of historic architectures and European urban views.
The work represents a market scene in a medieval town street.
Dimensions: 33×23 cm unframed, 51×41 cm with frame.
It is probably a vintage lithograph hand-watercolored.
The work, with its original gilded mat and gold frame, has been mounted by the firm W.M. Dibben, 104 Poole Road, Westbourne Bournemouth.
The original label on the back, “WM Dibben, 104 Poole Road, Westbourne, Bournemouth – Practical Frame Maker, Gilder & Picture Dealer”, classifies the work as a Victorian or Edwardian antique item.
