Ayrton Senna da Silva (São Paulo, March 21, 1960 – Bologna, May 1, 1994) was a highly successful Brazilian racing driver who became World Champion in Formula 1 three times over a ten-season span. He started in 161 races, securing pole position 65 times and winning 41.
Ayrton Senna began his racing career at four years old in karting. After competing in Formula Ford 1600 and 2000 classes, he won the British F3 in 1983 ahead of Martin Brundle.
He died as a result of a crash in the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. His death caused a great deal of upheaval in the F1 community and led to a whole range of safety measures.
