Description from the seller
The Lovers' Cat
Oil on canvas, 55 × 75 cm
In this painting, the female nude becomes the stage for a meeting that is at once tender, funny, and slightly irreverent. The cat, seated with an almost human assurance beside its model, seems to contemplate the scene as much as it participates in it.
The composition rests on a deliberately direct and spontaneous drawing: bold black outlines, rapid strokes, visible texture, and a deliberately restrained range of whites, grays, blacks, and earth tones.
The work seeks less realistic representation than the immediate expression of gesture and character. The contrast between the quiet monumentality of the nude and the almost comic expression of the cat adds to the scene an ambiguity between sensuality, complicity, and humor.
Original and unique work, painted and hand-signed by Michel Suret-Canale.
Original unique work. Shipped with its certificate of authenticity and value appraisal signed (see photo)
