Description from the seller
Attributed to Aurelio Mariani (1863–1939)
The Preaching of Blessed Antonio Baldinucci – Miracle of the Falling Leaves
ca. 1895–1905
Oil on canvas
Aurelio Mariani was an Italian painter active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly associated with religious and historical painting. His production belongs to the tradition of Italian academic sacred art, characterised by carefully constructed narrative compositions, precise draughtsmanship and an interest in episodes from the lives of saints and religious figures.
This imposing large-scale composition depicts a preaching scene traditionally associated with Blessed Antonio Baldinucci, shown addressing a gathered crowd beneath a tree while leaves appear to fall around him. The preacher stands elevated at the centre of the composition, accompanied by a prominent crucifix, while men, women, children and members of a religious confraternity react with devotion and attention.
The painting is particularly notable for its monumental vertical format, complex multi-figure composition and strong narrative character. The arrangement of the figures creates a theatrical but carefully balanced scene, while the extensive landscape background, architecture and distant mountains provide depth and place the religious episode within an idealised Italian setting.
The work is executed in oil on canvas and retains a substantial decorative frame. The canvas shows age-related characteristics consistent with its period. Detailed photographs of the front, reverse and ultraviolet examination are included for careful assessment.
Dimensions:
Painting: 98 × 72 cm
Framed: 114 × 87 cm
Depth: approximately 8 cm
A visually striking example of late 19th-century Italian religious painting, distinguished by its impressive dimensions, narrative richness and highly decorative presence.
