Irving Penn (1917–2009) was an American photographer who revolutionized the visual culture of the 20th century through his work in fashion, portraiture and still life.
Mostly known for his decades-long collaboration with the magazine Vogue, Penn eliminated the cluttered backgrounds characteristic of early fashion photography, favoring neutral and clean backgrounds as well as natural light to focus entirely on the sculptural forms and the elegance of his subjects.
