Description from the seller
Giorgio de Chirico
Midday at the Convent (1938)
Oil on canvas, cm 39.2 × 61. Signed at the bottom right “G. de Chirico”.
The work is archived at the Foundation Giorgio e Isa de Chirico, no. 006/01/26 OT.
Executed in 1938, "Midday at the Convent" belongs to the body of work in which Giorgio de Chirico again turns his gaze toward the Italian painting tradition. The composition, dominated by monumental architecture and punctuated by a rigorous construction of perspective, yields an image of absolute quiet, in which light and volumes define a space suspended in time. Although inspired by a real context, the artist goes beyond mere view to offer a personal interpretation of the urban landscape, where memory, classicism and contemplation coexist in perfect balance.
