Helga Kneidl (b. 1939) is a German photographer who became known especially for her impressive theatre and portrait photography. She gained international attention through her iconic photographs of the actress Romy Schneider, taken in Paris in 1973 and now regarded as significant witnesses of European photography. After training in dance and theatre, Kneidl first worked as a theatre photographer at prestigious venues such as the Berlin Schaubühne and the Hamburg Schauspielhaus. In the 1980s, she photographed numerous influential figures from the arts, film, and theatre, including Joseph Beuys, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Heiner Müller. Her photographic work is characterized by emotional proximity, documentary precision, and an intimate visual language. Helga Kneidl lives and works in Berlin and is considered an important German portrait photographer of the postwar period.
