Pair of studio pottery stoneware vases in informal Japanese style from the 1970s–1980s, made in Europe and found in Italy, comprising a 16 cm high spherical vase (20 cm diameter) with a geometric seal on the side and a 24 cm high bottle-shaped vase (12 cm diameter) signed GP, both finished with high-temperature crackle glaze variations and minor surface imperfections from handcrafting.
Description from the seller
Lot of 2 Stoneware Studio Vases – Informal Japanese Style (1970s/1980s)
Lotto details
• Item: Lot of 2 art vases
• Material: High-temperature stoneware
• Estimated period: 1970s / 1980s
• Country of origin: Europe (found in Italy)
• Conditions: Excellent overall; no cracks or significant restorations. Mild surface imperfections present (small craters and glaze irregularities) entirely due to manual shaping and kiln firing.
Object description
Pair of studio stoneware vases, entirely wheel-thrown in the second half of the 20th century. The pieces feature an informal aesthetic inspired by the Japanese ceramic tradition (Bizen and Shigaraki currents), characterized by an emphasis on raw materials and the effects of high-temperature firing. The two objects bear different maker marks but share the same stylistic research.
1. Bombé spherical vase (with stamped mark)
• Dimensions: Height 16 cm – Maximum diameter 20 cm
• Features: Flattened spherical body with a wide upper opening. The exterior surface is partly coated with a gray-blue glaze with a crakelé effect, topped by drips of dense white glaze. Notable brown and gold flame marks.
• Mark: Bears a geometric seal impressed on a square cartouche, visible on the side of the vase and left unslazed.
2. Slender bottle-form vase (signed "GP")
• Dimensions: Height 24 cm – Maximum diameter 12 cm
• Features: Elongated profile with horizontal grooves from finger marks during wheel-throwing. The glaze shows dark tones ranging from olive green to brown, with ochre and reddish hues caused by firing in a reducing atmosphere.
• Mark: Bears the initials "GP" (or "GF") carved freehand into the bottom exterior of the object, highlighted with dark oxide.
