Detailed description
Rare original edition of this fine collection of Norman regional poetry, published in Rouen at the end of the 19th century.
This unique copy stands out for exceptional bibliophilic features that make it a sought-after collectible:
• Precious Autograph Signed Dedication (handwritten inscription): The author wrote a full dedication by hand on the front free endpaper: “To Mr Dislère, Councillor of State, with the very earnest homage of a betrayed author. F. Bret”
The recipient is most likely Paul Dislère (1840-1928), a historical figure of the Third Republic (colonial and naval history), who was specifically named Councillor of State in February 1891, the year of the book’s printing. The wording “of a betrayed author” adds a captivating intimate and historical mystique. A librarians’ note in pencil also indicates “O.E.” (Original Edition) at the top.
• Careful typography and printing: The work benefited from high-quality local printing. The title is printed in two colors (red and black on the inner title page). The book’s paper features a transparent nominative calligraphic watermark: “Rouennais” visible under light, attesting to the special craftsmanship. The spine bears the printer’s mark of l’Établissement Cagniard representing the god Apollo (or a muse) with a lyre.
Condition:
• Cover : Original stitched binding. Paper browned on the outer boards consistent with the volume’s age, a few light signs of use normal for a document from 1891.
• Interior : Very clean and particularly well preserved. Paper remains very white, foxing very marginal if present. Excellent overall condition.
