Oil on canvas, late 19th century, English Barbizon School. Five cows at the trough at dusk in a woodland clearing. A white cow isolated on the left and four cows drinking on the right. Cloudy sky with touches of yellow.

Dimensions of the canvas alone 30 x 45.5 cm, measured on the back on the original keyed stretcher. With gilt frame about 44 x 60 cm.

No signature visible on the recto. Examined with a loupe. Not dismantled. Monogram TH interlaced in green on the back of the canvas. T uppercase with H interlaced.

Blue stamp of canvas preparer in four lines, very faint: PREPARED BY LONDON, typical of Winsor Newton Robertson Co, London 1880-1910. Confirms late 19th-century period. Green inscription TH.

Oil with visible impasto and spatula strokes; photos by day. English Barbizon technique, not production 1960. Original varnish yellowed; fine age craquelure; good condition. Losses of gilding at the frame corners worn. No restoration, no repainting, no tears.
