Pair of large Satsuma/ Kutani ceramic vases with crackle glaze and trumpet necks, each 33.7 cm high and 15 cm in diameter, from Japan dating to the Taisho/early Showa period (c. 1920–1940), in good condition with slight wear to gilding and glaze.
Description from the seller
Specular pair of large ceramic/terracotta vases with crackled glaze (crackle glaze or craquelé), typical of the Japanese-manufactured Satsuma/ Kutani style.
The two vases feature a trumpet-shaped form at the upper neck with a wide outward flare, finely decorated on the inside with medallion floral reserves. The central bodies host two main reserves framed by sage/ornamental enamel and gold motifs:
From one side is depicted a sage/dignitary (Scholar) seated near the coast with a coastal and mountainous landscape in the background.
From the other side is represented a female figure (Geisha / Court Lady) in traditional dress with a fan in a formal setting.
