Edward Hopper: “Summer Evening, 1947”.
This offset lithograph is in very good condition.
Size: 44 x 31 cm.
In Hopper's paintings, couples are usually used as a means to express hope or loneliness.
Here, however, the man and woman on the veranda, both young and dressed in the late forties style, form an exception to the artist's melancholic relationship paintings.
Nevertheless, the scene is charged with inner tension. The two figures, lit like actors on a stage, stand almost devoid of all defense mechanisms in the bright light, but seem to feel safe nonetheless.
Their meeting place is a defined area, and the last area to be conquered is the woman's body. The colors and concentrated composition make this an almost symbolic painting.
It resists a single, unambiguous interpretation, but like Hopper's other works on similar themes, it offers an empirical commentary on the patterns of existence, giving the viewer the impression of witnessing the opening scene of the story of a relationship.
