Description from the seller
Edward Hopper: “Summertime, 1943”.
Signed on the plate.
This offset lithograph is in very good condition.
Format: 44 x 31 cm.
The body of the young woman on the steps of a townhouse is revealed more than it is concealed by her light dress. In an almost provocative pose she looks the sun in the face. Curtains fluttering in the wind through an open window give dynamism to the bright architectural geometry of the painting and reveal — just like the entrance to the house — a black space inside.
As Hopper’s preparatory studies show, the curtains with their sexual connotation only appear in the final painting. The inner dynamic of the painting, fed by the interaction between the interior space and the phallic pillars, transforms the composition into a phantasmagorical construction. In it, desire and promise, challenge and surrender are directly translated into spatial images.
Where other Hopper paintings depict the boundaries between nature and civilization, this work focuses on the limits imposed on the body in the process of civilization.
Never framed and kept in a dark archival storage between protective acid-free paper.
The displayed photos are part of the description.
This artwork is carefully securely packaged and shipped in protective acid-free paper.
No shipping to the Canary Islands.
