Description from the seller
Listing Title
Antique Swedish Botanical Herbarium (1919–1923) – Created by Alice Eke and Ida Ströberg – Norrköping
Lot Description
Exceptional and unique antique Swedish botanical herbarium, meticulously compiled and curated over four years, from 1919 to 1923.
This precious natural history and family volume has extraordinary provenance: it was entirely collected, cataloged, and initialed by both mother and daughter, Alice Eke (mother) and Ida Ströberg (daughter). It is a fascinating, all-female testimony to early 20th-century botanical passion.
The collection is substantial and well-structured, internally consisting of 24 folders for a total of 43 botanical pages.
The cover preserves the original label from the historic Swedish bookstores of Norrköping: Lundbergs Bokhandel and the Nermans Bokhandel, with the indication of their respective branches in the city of Finspång and the original serial number of the handwritten archive, No. 74728.
Historical note on dating:
The binder bears on the cover an original Swedish label with text using archaic spelling (specifically the use of "af" and "behöfver" instead of the modern forms av and behöver). Since these linguistic features were abolished with the great Swedish spelling reform, the binder dates to before 1906. The album was subsequently used and compiled by the authors between 1919 and 1923, making it a fascinating transitional historical object that blends an era-appropriate cover with a postwar botanical collection.
A highly interesting and entirely authentic lot, ideal for collectors of antique botany, Scandinavian memorabilia, and history of science.
