Description from the seller
Superb large-format edition devoted to the early years of E.C. Segar and Thimble Theatre, before the appearance of Popeye.
Published by Sunday Press Books in 2018, this exceptional volume gathers the early works and illustrations of E.C. Segar, as well as a large selection of Sunday pages from Thimble Theatre dating from the 1925–1930 period, before and around Popeye's arrival. sundaypressbooks.com
The book notably reproduces 125 pre-Popeye Sunday pages, including the complete series of the famous desert adventure, regarded as one of the high points of the period preceding Popeye's definitive installation in the strip. sundaypressbooks.com
A rare opportunity to discover Segar's work before Popeye became his emblematic character: Castor Oyl, Olive Oyl, Ham Gravy and the other Thimble Theatre characters take center stage here.
The work is also remarkable for its spectacular 13 × 17 inch format (about 33 × 43 cm), allowing the comic pages to be reproduced at a size very close to their original publication. The Comics Journal
The edition received important recognition in the American comics world and was notably nominated for the 2019 Eisner Awards.
