——————

Léon Schwarz-Abrys, born Abraham Schwarz-Abrys, is a self-taught painter and writer of Hungarian origin, born in 1905 in Sátoraljaújhely and died in Paris in 1990. He settled in France in 1930 and worked in various jobs before gradually dedicating himself to art.

He came to notice at the Salon des Indépendants in 1939 with an original painting, sometimes enriched with matches and nails, which earned him the nickname of the “nail painter.” During World War II, he was interned at Sainte-Anne hospital (1943-1944), where he notably produced portraits and scenes related to the world of asylums.

A member of the École de Paris, he later developed a figurative and expressionist oeuvre, notably including landscapes of Paris, Corsica and Ireland.
