Description from the seller

Renaissance Flemish-inspired devotional triptych, made of gilded wood and consisting of three hinged panels. The images are prints.

Magnificent devotional triptych of Flemish tradition, composed of a central panel and two lateral wings hinged by metal hinges.

The composition presents in the central panel the Virgin Mary enthroned or seated in a majestic architectural interior, holding the Child Jesus. Both are depicted with the characteristic golden halos of Christian iconography. The Child is associated with an open book, an element of important symbolic content within Netherlandish religious painting.

The Virgin wears a wide mantle in reddish and pinkish tones, treated with abundant folds and ornamental decoration along the edges. Her face displays the characteristic serene, contemplative, and slightly melancholic expression of the Madonnas of late medieval Flemish tradition.

The architectural background is formed by a refined structure of columns, pointed arches, and Gothic-inspired elements, creating a kind of loggia or sacred space open to the landscape. The use of architecture as a frame for the Virgin figure is one of the characteristic devices of Dutch painting of the 15th and 16th centuries.

In the left wing appears a male donor kneeling in an attitude of prayer. He is depicted within a similar architectural space, with a rear opening that allows viewing a landscape. The character wears dark clothing and holds or stands next to a book, reinforcing the private and devotional character of the work.

In the right wing appears a female figure accompanied by the Child, also integrated into Gothic-architecture, with both donors establishing a visual dialogue with the Virgin and Child of the central panel and responding to a tradition widely observed among Flemish artists of the 15th and 16th centuries: representing the patron or owner of the work in a posture of prayer before the Virgin.
