An original Japanese textile hanging scroll titled Pagoda in the Mist — Sansui 山水, from the Shōwa period (1926–1989), measuring 183 × 53 cm, signed by an unidentified artist, with an inscribed wooden box and a cardboard sleeve, in fair condition with toning, spots and horizontal creases.
Description from the seller
A five-storey pagoda rises among dark pines in this Japanese-school hanging scroll, drawing the eye along a winding river towards mountains softened by mist.
Fine rooflines contrast with flowing brushwork, while pale water opens the scene into quiet depth. Floral, gold-toned borders frame the hand-painted ink landscape. 山水 (sansui), meaning “mountain and water”, names the landscape tradition shared by Chinese and Japanese painting.
The full mounted scroll measures 183 × 53 cm. It is signed and sealed, and includes an inscribed wooden box and cardboard sleeve. The painting has toning, spots and horizontal creases; the mounting and backing show soiling and edge wear. The box has handling wear, and the sleeve is scuffed with a split and loss at one end.
I am not a specialist; the artist remains unidentified and the twentieth-century dating is provisional.
