Background
Ray-Ban was originally created by the American optical company Bausch & Lomb in 1936 in Rochester, New York. Bausch & Lomb manufactured Ray-Ban sunglasses in the USA for more than six decades, developing many of the designs that became icons of 20th-century eyewear, including the Aviator and Wayfarer. In 1999, Bausch & Lomb sold the Ray-Ban brand to Luxottica, marking the end of the historic Bausch & Lomb USA period.
The Sidestreet family represents one of the more distinctive vintage Ray-Ban designs, combining metal frames with protective side cups / side shields, giving the glasses a sporty and somewhat utilitarian character. Various Sidestreet models were produced during the Bausch & Lomb period, including examples from the 1990s.
The B&L engraving on the mineral lenses is an important characteristic of vintage Bausch & Lomb Ray-Ban eyewear. However, authenticity and dating should always be considered from the combination of lens markings, frame markings, construction and other details rather than from one marking alone.
These vintage Bausch & Lomb Ray-Bans are particularly interesting to collectors because they represent the original American-made Ray-Ban era, before the 1999 change of ownership.
