Pietà, oil on canvas by the Florentine School from the late 18th century (1790), in Baroque style, Italy, sold with a gilded frame.
Description from the seller
Important and evocative oil on canvas painting depicting the Pietà, datable to the end of the 18th century, attributable to the Florentine school.
The composition depicts the Virgin Mary in the act of supporting the lifeless body of Christ after the Deposition. The scene is set against an intense dark background, from which the figures of the Virgin and Christ emerge, with a strong contrast between the deep tones of the background and the colors of the draperies.
Particularly effective is the portrayal of Christ, represented with the body abandoned in the Virgin's arms, in a composition of strong devotional and emotional intensity.
The Virgin is depicted with the traditional blue mantle and red tunic, chromatic elements that sharply stand out against the dark background tone.
On the back of the work there is an old handwritten label with the following indication:
“Pietà – end of 1700 – Florence – restored in 1992”
The label constitutes an interesting testimony regarding the provenance and historical identification of the work.
The painting also preserves a gold frame of antique taste, about 3.5 cm in width, which harmoniously completes the composition and enhances its presentation, dating from the restoration of the 1990s
CONDITIONS
The work is presented in conditions commensurate with its age.
The pictorial surface shows craquelure, signs of time and traces of previous conservation interventions. On the back several repairs of the canvas are visible.
The gilded frame shows normal signs of wear, small abrasions and losses of gilding due to age
It is recommended to carefully study all photographs for a complete assessment of the work's conservation status.
