Description from the seller
Royal Copenhagen / Aluminia - design by Berte Jessen
Elegant vase in Danish faience produced by Royal Copenhagen, characterized by a rectangular and slightly domed shape and by a refined figurative decoration in tones of deep blue, azure, black and pink, painted on a light background.
The decoration, with a strong graphic and almost fantastical character, features large floral elements and stylized botanical motifs, typical of Danish production with a modernist taste from the sixties.
The vase belongs to the Royal Copenhagen / Aluminia production and bears the design of Berte Jessen, Danish artist linked to the famous post-war Scandinavian faience period. Her production is particularly recognizable for the use of simple and modern forms associated with expressive decorations, often inspired by the plant world and reinterpreted in an almost abstract key.
Berte Jessen was born in Denmark in 1937 and studied at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts from 1954 to 1958. Precisely in 1958 she joined the group of young artists selected by Nils Thorsson, artistic director of Aluminia and Royal Copenhagen, to give new momentum to faience production. Jessen was indeed one of six young artists — from Denmark, Norway and Sweden — involved by Thorsson in the project that would lead to the famous Tenera production. The project began with the aim of radically renewing faience through contemporary shapes, bolder colors, experimental glazes and decorations entrusted to the sensibility of the individual artists.
The collaboration with Royal Copenhagen thus sits at one of the most important moments in twentieth-century Danish ceramics: that in the sixties and seventies the manufacturer moved toward a freer, more modern and international language. Jessen's works are today sought after precisely because they represent this transformation of Danish ceramic tradition towards Scandinavian Modern.
Dimensions: 18.5 x 14.5 x 6 cm.
In perfect condition.
