Heinrich Steiner was a German painter and printmaker. He was born in Kaiserslautern in 1911, the son of a theater director. In 1926 he attended the College of Arts and Crafts of Altona, Hamburg, and from 1927 to 1929 studied scenography between the Hamburg National Theatre and the Berlin one.
After studying scenography in Hamburg and Berlin, and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, he left Germany in 1938 to move to Italy, settling in Florence. Here he came into contact with the famous circle of German artists resident in Tuscany, forming deep ties with painters such as Rudolf Levy (a pupil of Matisse) and Eduard Bargheer. In 1946 he won the Colomba Prize at the Venice Biennale, consolidating an artistic career heavily influenced by the landscapes and light of the Mediterranean.
Debuts in Italy (1939-1946): His very first exhibition was held in Florence in 1939, shortly after his move. In the following years he exhibited in Milan and Venice, culminating this period with the victory of the Colomba Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1946. The return to Germany (1950s): In 1953 he received the prestigious Palatinate Prize (Pfalzpreis für Malerei) from his hometown Kaiserslautern, where he held a memorable solo show. Other important German exhibitions took place at the Kunstverein of Oldenburg, at the Westend Gallery in Frankfurt, and at the State Art School of Mainz. The Roman exhibitions: Settling permanently in Rome, his works were shown in noted galleries of the capital, including the gallery “L'attico esse arte”
