Description from the seller
Masterpiece of vascular surgery and pathological anatomy of the 19th century, this foundational work signed by the illustrious Professor Luigi Porta represents one of the most spectacular advances in medical science of its time through an iconography engraved with striking precision.
PORTA, Luigi.
DELLE ALTERAZIONI PATOLOGICHE DELLE ARTERIE PER LA LEGATURA E LA TORSIONE. ESPERIENZE ED OSSERVAZIONI.
Milano, Tipografia di Giuseppe Bernardoni di Gio., 1845.
An in-folio volume (dimensions about 25 x 35 cm), collated complete with its text and illustrations, comprising [2] ff. of half-title and title, followed by an extensive pagination of text and its superb plates. The work is magnificently illustrated with thirteen (13) splendid copper-engraved plates hors-texte (some folding or double-page), drawn by remarkable anatomist artists (such as B. Pampuri) and engraved by F. Citterio, representing with meticulous realism arterial alterations, ligatures, and the processes of torsion.
Original period cloth binding. Wear and losses at the corners, good overall condition. Interior remarkably preserved on large vellum paper, pure and with wide margins, preserving the absolute integrity of the black-and-white anatomical plates.
Luigi Porta (1800–1875), professor of clinical surgery at the University of Pavia and cherished pupil of the famous Antonio Scarpa, dedicated years of rigorous animal experimentation and human clinical observations to revolutionize the ligature and torsion of arteries.
His monumental book constitutes the definitive sum that made it possible to master hemorrhages and opened the path to modern arterial surgery.
