Rare work

Gerrit Willem de Bruyn (born 17 October 1727, Amersfoort - died 16 July 1797 in Amersfoort) who styled himself after his mother Van Oosten, enrolled in 1748 in Utrecht as a student of law and there was promoted in the same year. He settled in Haarlem but apparently had enough money not to need practice and devoted himself, among other things, to history. The Haarlem city council entrusted him with writing a city history, for which he gained access to the archives. The first part of his work appeared in print, the second part remains in manuscript in the Haarlem City Archive. After the restoration of the stadtholder in 1787, Van Oosten de Bruyn was appointed to the council in the vroedschap by William V and in 1789 and 1790 he was also mayor. At the upheaval of 1795 De Bruyn was dismissed and withdrew to his estate near Amersfoort.
