AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

A precious and imposing antique oil painting on canvas depicting the "Pietà with the Dead Christ" (also known as The Burial of Christ). The work, characterized by a beautiful painting technique and impasto, can be attributed to a master of the Emilia school/area active between the XVII and XVIII centuries (late seventeenth or eighteenth century).
The composition constitutes a cultured and monumental large-format reworking of the famous copper masterpiece executed by Annibale Carracci in 1595 (the original prototype is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York). Compared to the Carracci reduced model, this canvas expands the figures, granting them a solemn breath and a dramatically Baroque intensity, uniting the geometric precision of Bologna drawing with a theatrical and vigorous handling of chiaroscuro in a “tenebrous” tone.
In the center of the scene, the lifeless and sculptural body of Jesus is supported with devotion by Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea. On the left side unfolds the drama of the Virgin Mary, struck by fainting and assisted by the pious women, while Mary Magdalene is kneeling in the foreground at the feet of the Savior. The background shows a dark and stormy sky opening to the right onto a striking urban profile of the city of Jerusalem, creating a contrast of great emotional impact.
The painting is magnificently enriched and enhanced by its important period framed cassone (casing) with a dark lacquer, refined inner and outer gold details, which amplifies its elegance and wall presence.
State of Conservation and Technical Notes:
The work presents in excellent general conditions, consistent with the period. The painting has undergone in the past a professional conservation and aesthetic restoration intervention that has perfectly safeguarded the painted film and the canvas. The surface is stable and clean, with optimal pigment brightness and a uniform natural craquelure that certifies its historical authenticity. The period frame is equally solid and intact, free of serious gaps. The painting is ready to be hung and exhibited.
The frame visible in the photo is included as a courtesy and does not form an integral part of the work. Any damages to the frame will not be a valid reason for claims or order cancellations.
The dimensions of the work including the frame are: Length 100 cm, Height 85 cm.
Local pickup or to be arranged. Shipping costs are the buyer’s responsibility due to the delicacy of the work; on-site pickup is recommended.
