A sought-after chronometer-certified automatic variant of the highly recognizable Sports Elegance line, this TAG Heuer S/el reference S89.206 pairs early 1990s design language with serious mechanical credibility. While quartz models dominated this era, this premium execution features a COSC-certified movement housed within a distinctive matte sandblasted stainless steel case. Dial and Hands
The clean grey and anthracite dial surface presents in excellent condition, characterized by crisp white printed text that proudly denotes its chronometer certification. The applied indices feature an attractive, even creamy tritium patina that brings a wonderful vintage warmth to the monochromatic aesthetic. Time is indicated by traditional Mercedes-style hands with luminous material that perfectly matches the dial indices. The hands remain completely original, showing expected age-related oxidation and light spotting on their metal frames.
Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case features a distinctive, full matte sandblasted finish that underscores its utilitarian sports heritage. The geometry is well-preserved, showing only honest light handling marks and no major dents or deep scratches. The unidirectional rotating bezel, complete with raised numerals, shares the same matte finish and exhibits light wear on its raised edges consistent with careful use over the decades. A screw-down crown with a prominent TAG Heuer shield logo features crisp, well-defined knurling. The flat crystal remains clear with no visible scratches or chips.
Movement
Inside beats the caliber 2892-2, a premium 21-jewel automatic movement that was officially COSC chronometer certified. The mechanism presents a clean overall appearance with a gold-tone signed rotor and no visible corrosion or significant marks. Engravings reading "TAG-Heuer" and "TWENTY-ONE 21 JEWELS SWISS" are clearly presented. The timegrapher records a rate of +4+6s/day. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece.
Strap
The watch is fitted with its original signed bracelet, featuring the iconic S/el interlocking link design. The stainless steel bracelet maintains the matte finish of the case, showing light surface scuffs consistent with careful wear. It secures via a signed folding clasp and accommodates a maximum wrist size of up to 18cm.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition. The stainless steel case and interlocking bracelet are beautifully preserved, maintaining their original matte sandblasted finish with only honest light handling marks and surface scuffs. The dial is exceptionally clean, benefiting from a gorgeous creamy tritium patina, while the original hands display visible oxidation and light spotting on the metal frames. The bezel shows light wear on the raised edges consistent with careful use. Supported by the recorded timegrapher result, the automatic movement is performing very strongly.
Dimensions
The case measures 40 mm (excluding the crown).
Remarks
This reference S89.206 stands out through its premium chronometer-certified automatic movement, offering a significant mechanical upgrade over the standard quartz models of its time. The combination of the warm tritium patina against the grey dial and the distinctive interlocking bracelet makes this a superb and highly wearable vintage sports watch.
History
Introduced in 1987 and designed by Eddie Schöpfer, the S/el (Sports Elegance) collection was a defining pillar of TAG Heuer's catalog throughout the 1990s. The line was among the first to explicitly incorporate the brand's 'Six Features' concept, which established the visual and functional language for their modern dive watches. Produced until 1999, the S/el is most often found with quartz movements, making mechanical, COSC-certified examples like this reference S89.206 particularly notable among collectors who appreciate the era's distinctive aesthetic paired with traditional Swiss watchmaking.
