AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

For sale is a traditional Kavad shrine from Rajasthan, India, made of wood and elaborately hand-painted.

What is special about this exemplar is the unusually complex construction. The shrine not only has the two large outer doors but several more, partly concealed flaps and doors inside. When opened, several levels unfold in sequence and reveal a small, multi-layered pictorial space.

The numerous surfaces are decorated with a very rich, polychrome painting. Numerous figurative scenes, people, animals, plant and lotus motifs as well as ornamental elements can be seen. The individual doors and interior surfaces are each designed independently. Notably striking is the large, colorfully painted guardian face in the upper gable.

The base is also fully incorporated into the design and painted with floral motifs. Thus, the Kavad, in the opened state, looks like a small, fully ornamented domestic altar.
The new close-up photos show in particular the multiple, sequentially arranged doors and interior levels, which are not present in a simple execution of a Kavad. The elaborate construction and the multitude of painted surfaces make this exemplar a particularly decorative and interesting piece of Indian folk art.

- Origin: Rajasthan, India
- Material: wood
- Execution: hand-painted, polychrome
- Weight: approx. 260 g
- Closed dimensions: approx. 18 × 9 × 9 cm
- Width opened: approx. 30 cm
- Object type: Kavad / folding domestic altar / narrative wooden shrine

Good, age- and use-related condition. The painting is overall still very color-rich. There are minor areas of abrasion, color losses, and signs of wear that belong to the character of a hand-painted folk art object. The numerous flaps and doors are movable and can be opened.
Please note the numerous detail photos, especially the shots of the interior construction, the hidden flaps, the painting, and the back.
