Description from the seller
Rare edition from 1936.
Luxemburger Illustrierte – Full year 1936 – 2 bound volumes – 52 issues. Art Deco & photography covers. Luxembourg – Interwar period
Exceptional set of the Luxemburger Illustrierte, an important Luxembourg illustrated magazine from the interwar period, gathering the year 1936 in two impressive bound volumes.
The spines bear the gold title « Luxemburger Illustrierte – 1936 – I / II ». The issues have been preserved with their spectacular illustrated covers, constituting today a remarkable graphic, photographic and documentary testimony of Europe in the 1930s.
The copy presented begins with no. 1 of January 5, 1936 and ends with no. 52 of December 27, 1936, which corresponds to a complete year.
The magazine is particularly distinguished by the richness of its iconography, black-and-white and color photographs, portraits, current affairs, cinema, international stars, fashion, high society life, culture, Luxembourg events, advertising and modernist graphic compositions.
The covers are particularly interesting. Some display a very characteristic 1930s aesthetic, blending photomontage, monumental typography, geometric flat areas and Art Deco / modernist compositions.
Among these, No. 1 – January 5, 1936 spectacular color photographic composition combined with monumental typography « 1936 ».
No. 26 – June 28, 1936: remarkable graphic cover dedicated to the « National + International Music Competition », with a modernist composition representing instruments and architecture, graphic signature Théo Kerg visible in the upper corner.
No. 27 – July 5, 1936, large color photographic cover dedicated to actress June Collyer, representative of the glamorous film imagery of the era.
No. 51 – December 20, 1936, Christmas cover in color with a Christmas tree, candle, decorations and the typographic logo AZ – Luxemburger Illustrierte.
The value of this set goes beyond that of a simple old magazine kept as a bound collection; the publication constitutes a true visual archive of the year 1936, on the eve of the major European upheavals of the late 1930s.
Two bound volumes from the period, tawny brown grainy spine with faux nerves, with gold title and year. Robust bindings showing normal signs of use and conservation.
The interior appears generally well preserved for its age. Some covers and pages naturally show small marginal tears, folds, scuffing, handling marks and minor paper alterations.
The presence of the 28 June 1936 cover signed Théo Kerg is particularly interesting. Kerg (1909-1993), Luxembourgish artist associated with the European avant-gardes, adds an extra dimension to this set for collectors of modernist graphic design, Art Deco, illustrated press and Luxembourgish culture of the interwar period.
Illustrations include a large number of photographs and graphic compositions, in black and white and color
Themes: Luxembourg, current events, cinema, society, fashion, culture, photography, graphic design and advertising.
