Description from the seller
A high-quality, signed 1894 genre painting by Louis Lampe (1840–after 1898) with an intriguing signed back.
Visually and art-historically, it is a very fascinating 19th-century painting. The back is a work of art in its own right and a beautiful example of a painted cartellino (an illusionistic note) in trompe-l'œil style.
This atmospheric painting exudes a haven of calm, elegance, and serene nostalgia. A young woman in a flowing 19th-century white dress rests gracefully on a luxurious red chaise longue. Her posture radiates pure relaxation as she entirely loses herself in her delicate needlework. Large, French doors bring the lush, sun-drenched green garden visually inside. The soft daylight glides wonderfully across her dress, highlighting the rich textures of the fabrics. At her feet, a playful black-and-white cat with a ball of wool provides a lively and charming detail in the composition.
The artwork is enhanced by a deep royal purple velour mat and a monumental gold-patinated wooden frame that complete the classical look.

Louis Lampe (1840, Ledeberg – after 1898) was a Belgian painter who in the 19th-century art world was primarily known for his refined genre scenes (scenes from daily life).
He came from an artistic family. His father was the painter Jean-Baptiste Lampe (1812–1888) and his brother Jean Lampe (1853–1919) was also a painter.
Lampe studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and spent much of his life working in Brussels. From 1866, when he was still a student, until 1881 Louis Lampe exhibited at twelve Belgian Triennials, as well as at the 1876 Philadelphia World’s Fair.
As an art technical expert, Lampe carried out important restorations on major works by the 17th-century Flemish Baroque painter Gaspard de Crayer. He restored, among others, four paintings in Sint-Pieters Church in Opwijk (1893).
Several museums own works by Lampe, including the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, which possesses the painting “Un enfant endormi sur les genoux de sa mère” (1878).
This painting is in very good condition and will be shipped well protected.
