Engraving by Jacob van Meurs / Pieter Hendricksz Schut, after Claes Jansz Visscher, De Beurs - Hendrick de Keyser (1663), a 19 × 29 cm bird's-eye cityscape of Amsterdam in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Jacob van Meurs / P.H. Schut, after Claes Jansz Visscher
De Beurs - Hendrick de Keyser
Amsterdam: na, 1663.
This is the first issue as the title is only in Dutch.
An attractive bird's eye view of the Hendrick de Keyser Beurs (stock exchange) of Amsterdam. engraved by Jacob van Meurs / Pieter Hendricksz Schut for Olfert Dapper's Historische beschryving der Stadt Amsterdam (Amsterdam, 1663). The same plate was also used in Philipp von Zesen's Beschreibung der Stadt Amsterdam (1664).
Two sheets glued together, so obviously from a book. Now tipped onto hand made backing card with painted borders. The print is in very good, fractionally darkened state with a small crease to one corner. The board also has a few bumps.
Engraved area 19cm x 29cm,
Original sheet 27.5cm x 34.5cm,
backing card is 37.5cm x 45cm.
This plate can be dated as it shows the Exchange before its 1668 renovation
The Hendrick de Keyser's Amsterdam Exchange (Beurs) was the world’s first stock exchange. De Keyser's Beurs was demolished in the 1830s.
Lovely details of the people in the square. This is effectively a picture of 17th-century Amsterdam at work.
